WOW! All I can say about the last ten days of the season is that it was nothing short of phenomenal! While the bulk of the season was marginal at best, we went out with a bang. We had so many guys that wanted to get out on a hunt that we had to do some afternoon hunts to fit them all in. Thanks to all of you that made our season a success.

A picture is worth a thousand words in my eyes, so here they are!! All of these birds were taken from 1-19-12 through the closing day.

Today I guided Dan, Jason, Randy and Gabe on a duck hunt. The wind was blowing and the ducks were flying, but again there were a ton of sprig. We hunted until 9:00 and managed to kill 21 ducks before we headed out to shoot some pheasants. Hopefully the duck hunting is going to break loose with the weather that we are having and we can close the season with a bang!

Today I guided Jack on a duck hunt. We got to the blind and could hear alot of birds moving around but had to wait for legal shooting light. As soon as we were legal to shoot here came the teal. I don't know where they came from as I have not seen many teal all season but they were here today. Within 20 minutes we had 12 birds and had to wait for another hour to finish up with our limits. The flight the first 20 minutes was nothing short of incredible, but as soon as it started it was over. It was a great shoot, and the way the weather is stacking up for next week we should finish the season strong.

Another SUNNY day!! Boy am I getting sick and tired of staring into the sun, it seems to be the only weather that I have guided in this year. Although the forecast predicted clear and calm conditions we decided to try our luck as I guided Dan, Eric and Ken on a duck hunt. We got to the blind and there were not too many birds flying, but the ones that were decoyed well and by 9:30 AM we had our 8 pintail, a pair of widgeon, a gadwall, and a ross goose. While the hunt wasn't red hot it was enough to make these guys happy, as we did alot better than expected. The hunting seems to be getting better each day as the full moon is starting to retreat. Hopefully the combination of a smaller moon and a chance of weather in the forecast will allow us to finish the season with a bang.

Today I guided Pete and Larry on a pheasant hunt. The guys wanted to hunt ducks but with the weather we are having we decided to switch or focus and hunt pheasants instead. I planted 12 birds for the guys and they took 7 home with them. While my new pup isn't getting much duck retrieving action lately, she sure is turning into a hell of a pheasant dog and has even started to point them. It was a good hunt and I always enjoy watching the dog work.

Today I guided Greg and Rogell for ducks and they brought along Joe as a spectator as he did not have a current license. We got into the blind and had a decent North wind but the only thing flying was pintail. We finished up with our pintail in short order and managed to add a couple of spoons to the strap as well. If only the limit on pintail was 7, we could have had a great shoot!!!

Today I guided Ed and Michael for ducks. The weather was once again clear and calm and the flight was minimal. Around 8:30 the sprig decided to come out and play and it wasn't long before we had our limits of them. We waited until about 10:00 to see if anything else would come out to play but were only able to scrounge up a single widgeon. There were quite a few more pintail flying but all we could do was sit and watch. If things don't change soon, this will go down as the worst season ever in my book.

Today I took the editor of WON out for an on-the spot hunt. There were a ton of birds before legal shooting light, but as go time came the ducks went! It was pretty apparent that the hunting was going to be slow this morning as there was just not many birds moving but we made the best of the day and ended the hunt at 9:30 AM with 8 sprig and 3 mallards for the 4 of us. Today it was quality over quantity! You just never know what is going to happen in the rice this year, but you don't know if you don't go. We will see what tomorrow brings!

One of the guide blinds was thrashed and in need of some TLC so I grabbed the guys and we headed to the blind for a quick morning hunt and then a little blind work. The weather was the same old clear and calm but the ducks were flying and we made short work of them. The four of us scratched together 25 ducks and a goose by 10:00 AM. There was alot of big bills on the strap today but they will make good sausage. The way this season has been we will take what ever decides to fly!

This morning I did not have any client's so I took Regina and Big Shot out for a hunt. We got into the blind and almost immediately the action started. There were tons of sprig flying and every once in awhile something else would sneak in with them. The birds flew pretty steady and we ended the hunt with 18 birds for the 3 of us. It was a fun hunt and it is always nice to get Regina out to the blind for a good shoot.

Today I guided Miguel and his 8 year old son for ducks. We got into the blind right before shoot time and there were quite a few birds flying. There were tons of sprig flying, but not many other birds. We poked away at them and ended up scratching together 13 birds for the 3 of us. We should have had a few more, but that is how it goes some days.

Today the weather was a bust so we switched our focus from ducks to pheasants. I did a 20 bird plant for Randy, Brad, Ken and Landon and they had a blast. Out of the 20 birds the guys ended up killing 13. It was alot of fun watching the dogs work, and it beat the hell out of staring into the blue sky looking for ducks.

Today I guided Dick and guest for ducks. The weather was clear and calm but there were a few birds flying. We poked away at the birds and ended up killing 14 for the 3 of us. Not a bad shoot for another sunny day!

Today I guided Paul and Miguel on a duck hunt. It was clear and calm again but I was optimistic as the refuge would be shooting. At first light the refuge began shooting and within 30 minutes the sky was full of birds. We were all having a case of the bent barrel today but we stayed after it and ended the morning with 14 birds. We should have had 3 limits but just couldn't get it done today. It was another good shoot for the weather that we have been having.

Today I guided Dan, Cam, Bob, and Corey for ducks. We got to the blind and the whole pond was frozen so I broke up the ice and waited to see what would happen. The hunt started out slow with very few birds flying but as it warmed up a few birds started working and we made the best of it. We ended the mornings hunt with 19 birds and should have had 6-8 more. Not bad for a clear, calm day!

Today I guided Chuck on a duck hunt. We got into the blind and had a 15 MPH North wind and birds were flying all over. The bulk of the birds flying were sprig but we stayed at it and would get a group of widgeon to follow in the sprig ever so often. We had a good shoot and ended the hunt with 10 birds, and should have had our 14. It was another good shoot.

Today I guided Jeff and Adam Fischer for ducks. We got into the blind and there were alot of birds flying as shooting time neared. Right at legal shooting light the birds started coming in and the guys started killing. It was fast and furious for the first hour and then the low fog blew in and all of the ducks stayed above it. We stuck it out hoping the fog would lift but by the time it did the birds were done flying. We ended the hunt with 13 birds. We should have finished with 3 limits but we just could not catch up to the teal as they were dipping and diving.

The North wind was blowing when I got up this morning so we headed down to the Davis Tule to give it another try. When we got to the blind it was evident that the ducks that were around yesterday had disappeared but the geese were flying and we poked away at them. We ended the morning with 6 specks, 5 snows and 4 ducks. Not red hot but it was pretty damn good for a quick morning hunt.

The clients cancelled last minute so I figured I would head down to the Davis Tule and see what was going on down there. I wasn't expecting much as the weather was some low fog and it was dead calm but boy was I wrong. The hunting was fast and furious as balls of teal and wigeon sucked right into the decoys. It wasn't long and we were limited out. We ended the morning with 21 ducks, and 3 cacklers.

Today I hunted with Max and guest. They had purchased a hunt that we had donated to the Valley Waterfowl dinner last year. I had expected the North wind to blow through the night, but instead it died and we had clear skies and zero wind. We got into the blind and waited to see what the morning would bring. The flight was pretty dismal but we poked away and ended up killing 10 ducks, and should have had a few more. For the weather that we were dealt it was a pretty good hunt.

Today I guided Les and Phil for ducks. We got to the ranch and had a lite North wind blowing and had high hopes. The hunt started out slow but picked up as the morning went on and we ended up having a great shoot. We ended up with 19 ducks and 1 speck for the morning and should have finished up with limits had we not let a few get away. It was another good hunt!

Today I hunted with Kent and Dave from Sportsmans News. We are working with them to film some of our hunting and fishing adventures and then turn them into a DVD. The hunting was pretty slow for the first couple of days that they were here but turned out pretty good on their last hunt. The hunting wasn't fast and furious but we did manage to get 16 ducks and a speck, before we had to get out of the blind. It was a good hunt and we got some great video footage.

Today I guided Bill and Tom for ducks. The weather was clear and calm but as the refuge began shooting a few birds started working our way. Slowly but surely we scratched away at them and by 11:00 AM both Bill and Tom had their limits. It was not fast and furious but it was good enough! Hopefully this is the end of the rut that we have been stuck in for the last 5-6 days.

Today I guided Rhy's Panero and his family for ducks. The hunting was slow with the pathetic weather that we are having.The highlight of the day was when Rhy's Jr. bagged his very first drake mallard. It came in picture perfect and he smoked it!

Today I did a 20 bird pheasant plant for Rick and Chris Bailey.We met at noon and unloaded my trusty pointer Toby and went to hunting. Toby is a blast to watch work and he did great as usual, putting up all of the planted birds as well as a few wild ones. Both Rick and Chris had a great time and managed to bag 10 birds for their Christmas dinner. The bulk of today's entertainment was when Toby and the local raccoon population had it out. It was a hell of a fight but Toby came out on top.

Today I guided Chris and Corey for ducks. As sson as we got to the blind we sat and watched as wave after wave of birds left the rice and headed back to the refuge. It was apparent that with the clear nights and the full moon the birds were feeding all night long. As soon as shooting light came around the flight was pretty dismal but we stuck it out and ended up killing 9 ducks. By 10:00 AM the flight was done, so we packed up and headed into town for breakfast. It was not fast and furious but it's about all we can ask for with the current weather.

Today I guided Chris and Corey for pigs. We hit the hills at first light and hunted our butts off all day long. With the clear nights and the full moon the pigs had gone nocturnal but we stayed after them and finally caught a break. Right at last light we spotted a small group of pigs and Chris was able to get the job done. He made a great 1 shot kill, hitting the 150 pound sow right behind the ear. It was a long day in the hills but we got the job done. There is a ton of fresh rooting all over the ranch but we need a change in the weather to keep them out during the day.

I guided Bill and Bob today for ducks. The weather was clear, calm and cold and we were not expecting too much but the hunt turned out good. Fortunately Bill and Bob were on their A game when it came to shooting and they were able to scratch out their limits. We ended the morning with 2 mallards, 2 teal. 2 widgeon, 2 sprig, 5 spoons, and a trophy sized merganser! It wasn't necessarily quality but in weather like this I will take it.

Today I guided the Jamie's for ducks. We got into the blind before shooting hours and watched as wave after wave of ducks headed back into the refuges after feeding all night. That is never a good start to the morning but the guys stayed optimistic and at legal shooting hours we went to work. The morning started out slow but there were a few birds flying and the ones that were came to the call. The guys were shooting really well and at 11:30 we called it a day. We ended up with 21 ducks on the strap today and the majority of the birds were mallards. We had alot of fun and the guys all got to shoot a couple drake mallards of which they had never shot before. Hopefully the hunting will stay this way throughout the remainder of the season.

I guided Derek and guest today for ducks. The morning started off pretty slow but as time went on the birds started to fly. Again, there were tons of pintail and we made short work of them. Then we would just sit and wait for some other ducks to join the party. We poked away at the birds and ended our morning with 12 ducks and 3 geese. Not the best hunt of the season as far as quantity of birds goes but I would take 12-15 birds all season long and be happy!

I guided Dan, Chuck, and Bob today for ducks. The wind was blowing and the birds were flying. Again,it was mostly sprig but we would pull in some other birds now and again. We poked away all morning and called it quits at 11:00 PM. We ended up killing 16 ducks and a pair of honkers that made a nice addition to the strap.

I took Ed and Vann out for ducks this morning. We got to the blind about 15 minutes before legal shooting hours and there were quite a few birds flying. At legal shooting light we started poking away at them and although it took longer then expected we ended the morning with 19 ducks for the 3 of us. The majority of the birds that were flying today were sprig, and we sat and watched as group after group worked the decoys. It sure would be nice if they would up the limit to 3 sprig again!!

Today I guided Ken and Andy for ducks. The wind was howling and I figured it would be red hot, but it ended up being slow and steady. There were not alot of birds flying but the ones that were seemed to be listening well. We hunted until 11:00 AM and ended the morning with 18 birds. We had our sprig, a few widgeon and the rest were mallards. It was another good hunt and we all had a blast.

This afternoon I guided Vann and Ed for ducks. We got to the blind around 2:00 PM and it wasn't long before the shooting started. Right off the bat the sprig started to work and before long the guys both had their sprig on the strap. For awhile all that was working were sprig but we finally got a pair of widgeon to commit and the guys killed both of them. As the afternoon went on the mallards started to fly and the guys poked away at their limits. Ed was the first to tag out and Vann only needed 1 more duck. It was right down to the wire but we got another single mallard to come in 2 minutes before the close of hours and Vann smoked him. It was a great afternoon hunt and the guys ended with a quality strap of birds. They had 4 sprig, 2 widgeon, and 8 mallards! You have got to love the North wind!!!

Today I guided Bill Gesler and guest for ducks. We got to the blind just before shooting hours and were fogged in. I could hear the ducks above the fog and knew it was just a matter of time before the fog got blown out by the North wind. The wind finally got kicking around 9:00 AM and it was a free for all. There were birds coming from all directions and they guys were doing their best to knock them down. We finished up with 21 birds at 10:30. Hunting in the bird North wind is always a good time. I will be back at it tomorrow and the weather man says it will be another WINDY day! I can't wait.

Today I guided Glenn and Chuck for ducks. We got to the blind 20 minutes before shooting time and could hear birds in the air but could not see them through the thick fog. As it neared legal shooting time the North wind started to pick up and a clear spot developed above us. Right at legal shooting time we had a pair of sprig come in and the guys nailed them both. Before the dog could get them both back to the blind we had 3 widgeon drop in and we killed them all. Shortly thereafter a pair of widgeon dropped in and the guys smoked them to. It was fast and furious but we were soon fogged in again and the waiting game began. Every time that a hole would open up in the fog the birds would start funneling into the field and we would put the smack down. By 7:15 we had 19 birds but got fogged in again and had to wait until 7:45 for our last pair of birds. It was a great hunt and nothing short of fast and furious. Hopefully the trend that we have going will continue!

Today I guided Brad, Joel, and Derek for ducks. Unlike yesterday, the weather was a socked in Tule fog. As soon as we got to the blind we could hear birds but it was just to thick to see. As the morning progressed we started killing some birds and poked away until we finally had our limits at 12:00PM. It was by no means fast and furious but a great shoot none the less. We ended up with 28 ducks and 2 specks for the four of us. Today the predominant bird on the strap was widgeon. They are calling for 30MPH North winds tomorrow so we will be back at it again!!

I had to go out and move a bunch of decoys so I called my buddy Derek and suckerd him into a quick morning hunt and then helping me with the decoys. As we got to the club it was clear and still, perfect duck weather? As we got to the blind and shooting hours came there were birds all around us and they were responding to the call well. By 8:30 we had 14 ducks and 2 specks and were ready to begin the chore of moving decoys in the stomped field. Today was the attack of the gadwall and we ended up with our 4 sprig, 8 gaddys, and 2 widgeon. As we were moving the decoys the sprig just kept on pouring in. It looked to me like the last few days of fog have moved some birds into our area. The ducks are not skinny so they must have just come from other parts of the valley ahead of the fog. Hopefully the good hunting will continue from here on out.

The majority of the strap were big ducks and they were working great. It was a great time in the blind and I hope the 3 of us can hunt again together soon. We all had a blast!!

Today I guided Dick Bradshaw and guest. We again went to Packer Rd., and had a pretty good shoot. The weather was a low fog but the teal seemed to be flying and we took advantage of them. We ended the morning with 11 ducks and should of had 8-10 more birds but they managed to zig when we zagged. It was a fun hunt and hopefully the hunting will continue to improve.

Today we did not have any clients so I went on solo mission. I headed out to Packer Rd. and was pleasantly surprised with what I found. I was all alone so I took my time and ended up killing my limit of ducks and 1 speck. It has been pretty slow for the last week and hopefully this hunt was a sign of good things to come.

Today I guided Michael and Matt for pigs. We headed up to the ranch and started our pursuit but all we were seeing was old sign so we made a loop back towards the truck to go and try a new area. As we were headed down the hill I looked over and spotted a group of pigs feeding on the ridge just above the truck, go figure! We quickly put a plan together and the stalk was on. As we crested the last ridge I spotted the pigs feeding a mere 75 yards away. I got the guys together and they picked out their pigs. Just as I was getting ready to do the count down I felt the wind hit my back and the pigs started to move so Michael took his shot and his aim was true, dropping the 120 pound sow in her tracks. The rest of the pigs started to move off and crested the ridge before Matt could shoot. It was getting late and Michael wanted to get his pig to the butcher so we got it skinned and they hit the road. It was a good hunt and would of been even better had that damn wind not swirled. But that is hunting, and mother nature. You just never know what is going to happen!

Today I guided Eric and Jermey for ducks. We again headed back to Packer Rd. and it was game on. With the refuge shooting today the birds were really moving and we did our fair share of shooting. We finally called it quits at 10:30 AM with 10 birds. We had alot of birds come in today and alot of birds fly off unscathed. The guys shot 3-4 boxes of shells between them and had a great time. Hopefully the hunting continues to be this good, but I am sure that all good things must come to an end. Until then we will stay after them.

Today I guided Larry and Carl Lynn for ducks. Our rice blinds finally have some water so we headed over to Packer Rd. to see if there were any birds. For a sunny day the flight was very good and in the matter of a couple hours the guys had limited out. It was another quality hunt with mostly big ducks.

Today I guided Chuck White and guest for ducks. We hit the field early and got all set up and ready to kill some birds. As soon as legal shooting light hit we had some birds working and killed a couple before it slowed down. It was not slow for long and the birds seemed to be coming back slowly but shurely. We picked away at our limits but were only able to end the morning with 10 birds. However, it was not for lack of birds! We should of had limits for the 3 of us but we all seemed to have a case of the bent barrel today, if you know what I mean!!! It was another great hunt, with good clients.

Today I guided Jeff, Jenny, and Alan for ducks at the wetland. We got to the field early and got all set up and awaited legal shooting hours. At first light there were birds all over but as fast as it started it slowed down. The birds seemed to be very wary for opening day but we stuck around until 10:00 AM and managed to end the morning with 16 birds. Although the hunting wasn't red hot it sure felt good to be in the duck blind again. I am looking forward to another great season.

Today I guided Wayne Poe and friends for Salmon. We hit the Feather River again and the bite was on, however, our hookup to land ratio again sucked. Today we hooked a total of 15 fish only to land 4. The fish were all hooked on flatfish in the swift current and they just did not want to stay on the hook, but oh well that is how it goes some days. It was another great day on the water with alot of excitement.

Today I guided Dan Todd and his crew for salmon on the Feather River. We launched at Vance Ave. and headed up stream. We had not been fishing for a minute when we hooked the first fish but it was lost at the boat. The trend of hookup and then lose the fish continued all day but we eventually ended up landing a few for the box. We hooked a total of 13 fish today but only managed to boat 4. All of the fish were hooked on flatfish and roe. It was another great day on the water with alot of action.

Today I guided Lee Shropshire Jr. and Fred Howland on a pig hunt. We met in Colusa and headed up to the ranch. Upon completing the necessary paperwork we headed to a high vantage point over looking the wheat field to see if any pigs were still using it as a feed source. As it got lighter I was sure that there would be pigs in the field but I just could not find any. After 10 minutes of staring into the field I finally spotted a large group of black dots in the center of the field and it was game on. I figured that the pigs were going to head east, given there current location so we loaded up in the ranger and drove around to the other side of the field to try and cut them off. As soon as we had driven through the gate and into the wheat I looked over at 80 yards and there they stood. We could only see the tops of their backs because they were in a small depression so the guys got into the back of the ranger and used the roll bar as a rest. On the count of three gun shots broke the silence but nothing fell. The pigs took off across the field and by then the boys were warmed up and shooting straight. Lee was the first to drop one and Fred was not far behind. Both of the guys ended up with small boars in the 125 pound range. This was just what they were looking for as they wanted meat for the freezer. The hunt was short and sweet, as we had the pigs loaded into the ranger and headed for the skinning shack before the sun was all the way up. Both of these guys were a pleasure to hunt with and I hope to see them again in the future.

Today I guided Rick Sr. & Rick Jr. for salmon. We hit the water at 9:00AM and headed back up stream to where we had fished a few days ago. Within minutes Rick Jr. was hooked up and had the first fish in the box. We made a couple more passes without any bites so we headed further up stream to see what we could find. We saw very few fish on the sonar and very few rolling but we kept at it and caught a fish here and there as we worked our way down stream. We ended up hooking 7 fish and landing 4 today. The biggest landed was a 30 pound buck caught by Rick Sr. and Rick Jr. hooked into an even bigger one that we lost right at the boat. It was another great day on the water and I am sure that there will be a push of new fish soon.

Today I guided Rick and Estelle for Salmon. Again we launched at Ord Bend at 9:00 AM and headed up stream. We got to the first hole and immediately it was fish on. Pass after pass we were hooking fish, and within no time we were limited out! The fishing was so fast that after Rick and Estelle had limited out I went ahead and caught a couple for myself. Today all of the fish were caught on roe and in great shape. I had all 6 of the fish cleaned and the boat back on the trailer by noon. It was fast and furious, now lets just hope that it stays that way!!

Today I guided Rick, Nolan, and George for salmon. We all had things to do in the early AM so we headed out at 10:00AM to see what we could catch. We launched the boat at Ord Bend and headed up stream to see what we could find. The first couple of holes were not holding any fish but as we made our way through the next run it was fish on. George was the first to hook up and the others followed in quick order. We fished from 10:00-3:00 and then called it a day. We ended up hooking 8 fish today on roe and managed to land 5 of them. All of the fish were small jack salmon but they fought like champs and they cut beautifully. The meat was bright colored and firm, fresh from the ocean. It was a great day on the water and I think I may just continue to fish bankers hours for the rest of the season!

Today I guided Carol Miller on a salmon trip and Andy came along for the ride. We hit the water at 7:00 and made our way up river. We stopped at the first hole and within seconds of the lures going into the water it was fish on! Carol hooked the fish and within minutes he was in the net. The fish was a ten pound jack salmon but we were happy to have him. We made a couple of more passes in this hole as I was marking fish but they had lock jaw so we moved on. At the next stop Andy got a bite and caught another jack salmon. I did not see many fish in this hole so again we headed up stream. At the next stop we started up high and worked our way into the hole. Just as we got to where the run tailed out Carol's rod went down and it was fish on. Right of the bat you could tell it was no jack as it was stripping line off the reel. Carol fought the fish for 20 minutes before we finally slipped the net under the 30 pound buck. As soon as we landed the fish we looked up to watch all of the other boats swarm the hole so we moved on. We went back down stream to the first hole that we fished today and within seconds Andy had one try to rip the rod out of his hand but he was a little slow on the draw and the fish got away with his bait. He caught alot of shit from both Carol and I but it was all in good fun. We managed to box 3 fish today and had a few missed bites. It was not red hot but we had a great time on the water. The fishing should only get better as the month goes on and I am looking forward to many more days on the water this season.

Today I guided Tom, Maury, and Phil for Salmon. We hit the water at 7:00 AM and headed up to the first hole to see what we could find. We put on sardine wrapped K-15's and started back trolling, but as we went through the hole there were no fish on the screen so we headed up river. We checked a few other holes on the way up but did not find any fish until we got up around Stony Creek. As soon as we found fish we switched to roe and right off the bat it was fish on. We fought the fish for 15 minutes before slipping it into the net. It was a beautiful 20 pound buck and in the box it went. We headed back up and made another pass. As soon as Phil's bait hit the bottom he had fish on! The fish put up one hell of a fight and soon enough he had the fish in the box. We made a couple of more passes and came up empty so we moved on. At the next stop we hooked another nice fish and had it in the box quickly. We began fishing our way back towards the ramp as it was getting hot and the guys did not want to bake. We hit a couple more holes and got a few more bites but missed them. We ended the day with 3 salmon in the 17-25 pound range. The fish are fresh from the ocean and the meat is as bright red as I have ever seen. It was a great day on the water and these guys have already booked another day in October, so you will be seeing them again.

The salmon run has finally returned on the Sacramento River. We have been fishing out of Ord Bend and although the fishing is a little slower than up around Chico the boat pressure is minimal. I would rather catch half of the fish and not have to deal with all of the other boats. It just makes for a nicer day for all. We have been averaging 3-5 fish per day with several other hook ups that just don't make it into the boat. One day the fish will hold and the fishing is great and other days the fish are moving and you have to try and stay in front of them. Either way we are catching salmon again, but some days are better then others. The water flows should be coming down soon and the fishing should improve as more of the fish should slow down and start to hold in the holes. We still have plenty of availability through October so give me a call and we can get your trip on the books!!

We have gotten through the dove opener and again it was a success. I would like to thank all of you who came out for the annual dove opener and I hope all of you had a great time. The dove hunting was a little slower than usual as the birds were very spread out this year due to all of the alternative feed sources. The hunting in the morning was just mediocre but the afternoon shoot was excellent. Most of our hunters finished up with limits of birds or very close to limits. It was another fun hunt and I look forward to seeing you all again next season. Thanks again!!

Today I guided Bill Brown on a pig hunt. I met him in Colusa at 4:30 AM and we headed up the hill to try and fill his tag. We checked the wind and decided to go check out the north wheat field, however, today we accessed it from the west side. We parked the ranger at 5:00 AM and took off walking to try and get into position before the pigs started to leave the wheat field. About 10 minutes before legal shooting light we watched as 2 different boars walked past us and up into the hills. We sat tight with our eyes glued to the wheat field when I noticed a big boar working his way towards us. I checked the clock and it was legal shooting light so Bill got on the sticks and ready to shoot.The boar was coming closer and looked as if he was going to use the trail right below us to get through the creek and then bring him right below us. We lost sight of the pig and figured he would be right in front of us in minutes, however, we watched in dismay as he came back out of the creek and headed the other direction. We tried to get a shot but the boar had other plans so Bill and I took off after him. We had gone about 100 yards when I looked out into the wheat and saw another group of pigs headed straight for us. I got Bill set up on the sticks again and he tried to pick out a pig that he wanted. There were 3 nice sized pigs in the group so Bill got on the back one and took a shot. The bullet sailed over the pigs back and off they went. The biggest of the group ran out to about 200 yards and stopped broadside giving Bill another shot but this one went high as well. The pig then turned and went into the creek and we set off to see if we could catch it. We spotted the pig again but this time he was out in the wheat and running south. We took off in that direction to see if maybe he would slow down but he never did. As we were walking back towards the ranger we spotted another group of pigs about 500 yards in front of us but we just couldn't close the gap and had to watch as the pigs headed up the hill and into the brush. We finally got back to the ranger and loaded up and headed to see if there was anything still out in the south field. As we got high enough to see the field I spotted a lone boar making his way up into the hills on the East side of the field and knew there was no hope of catching him so we headed up into the hills to see what else we could find. We had gone about 5 miles when we came over a ridge and spotted a lone pig feeding in the flats. I stopped the ranger and within seconds Bill had the pig in the cross hairs and put the smack down. The shot was true and we were soon standing over a 80 pounder that will be great for the BBQ. Bill had wanted to get a good boar for the wall but we just did not have a chance at one today so he booked another trip in October to see if we can find one then. It was another great hunt and I am already looking forward to the next one.

This morning we were back at it with the boys from Reno. Both Travis and Chad had yet to get a pig so Andy took them and headed to the south wheat field, while Andrew, Scott and I headed to the north field to take a look. Andrew had another tag and was looking for 1 more pig while Scott was just along for the ride. We walked out into the wheat field just like we had done the previous morning and within seconds I had spotted some pigs running around in the wheat. We took off in hot pursuit but as we climbed to the top of the knoll we spotted 3 different groups of pigs headed up towards the hills. They must have smelt us as the wind was swirling and the gig was up. We headed back towards the ranger and just as we got to it we heard all hell break loose in the south field. Andy called minutes later to let us know that they had 2 pigs down and we called it a morning. We headed over to the guys to give them a hand and get the story. Andy said they had no more than got to the top of the hill when he could see pigs moving around in the wheat field. He knew that they were headed for water so they snuck down the hill to try and cut the group of pigs off. As soon as they got into position the pigs came up and over the dam and that is when the shooting started.Travis and Chad's first shots were at a couple of 150 pounders but they did not connect. Meanwhile a couple of nice meat pigs in the 60-70 pound range walked out and just stood there so the boys pulled down on them and let them have it. Both shots were good and they were soon standing over some of the finest eating pigs that they will ever eat. All in all it was a great hunt and all 4 of the Reno crew were able to harvest a pig. You can't do much better than that. These guys are regulars and already talking about the next trip.

This morning I guided Scott Seidenstricker from Reno, Nevada on a pig hunt. We headed up to the ranch and decided to take a walk in the north wheat field to see what was out there. We parked the ranger and began making our way towards the hills that are in the middle of the wheat so that we could get a better view of the field. As we topped out on the first small rise I looked down and spotted a group of 15 pigs making their way across the field. I ranged the pigs at 200 yards and Scott got on the sticks and ready to shoot. As soon as he was ready I stopped the pigs and he sent a round down range. The bullet went right over the lead pigs back and as they turned to run he gave them a couple more but never managed to connect. With all of the noise we had made we figured we would hop back on the ranger and see if there were and pigs left in the South field. We rode to the top of the ridge and glassed but could not locate any pigs so I decided to make my way south with hopes of spotting some pigs that may have left the wheat earlier. We had gone about a mile when I looked down and saw a boar making his way in our direction. I had no more then stopped the ranger and pointed the pig out to Scott when the boar stepped onto the road 15 yards from us. It did not take Scott long to get on the pig and touch the trigger. The pig fell dead in his tracks, and the only dragging we had to do was right into the back of the ranger. Scott had 3 of his boys in route from Reno to come and hunt with us on Saturday so we loaded up his pig and headed to the shop to get it skinned and hung in the cooler.

Two of the boys showed up early, so I grabbed Andy and we headed up to the ranch to see if we could get another pig killed. Andy decided to take Scott and Travis with him and head south and I took Andrew with me and headed north. We were going to make a big loop around the ranch towards each other and meet up in the middle. We had been hunting for a couple of hours when Andrew and I both spotted what looked like legs under a manzanita bush. I stopped the ranger and as soon as I threw up the binoculars I knew it was a nice sized pig. Andrew got on the sticks and prepared for the shot. As he was getting set to shoot we could hear the other ranger coming down hill towards us. Andrew got set and took the shot dropping the pig in it's tracks only seconds before the other guys came around the corner. The guys heard the shot and stopped to congratulate Andrew before continuing down the hill in search of a pig for Travis. They never did see a pig but it was so hot out that I think they were sticking tight to the brush and Andrew and I just got lucky. However,I have always said "I would rather be lucky than good". We headed to the shop to get Andrew's pig in the cooler and try to get a few hours of sleep before we had to be back at it again.

This evening Andy and I guided a group of 3 hunters on a pig hunt. We arrived at the ranch at 6:30 loaded up in the rangers and headed in separate directions. Andy was going to head into the big canyon south of the wheat field and just sit, while I took the other 2 hunters for a ride in the canyons to the north. I started up the center of the ranch and stopped in a couple of locations to glass. As we made our way into a big shaded canyon I spotted a big black and white boar and we headed down towards the bottom of the canyon to see if we could get in front of him. We got set up and waited about 20 minutes but the boar never showed, so we loaded back up in the ranger to make our way further into the canyon. Before we could take off Neil realized that he had lost his I-phone, so back up the hill we went to try and find it. Sure enough it was sitting on the ground at the first place we had stopped to glass. At this point it was nearing prime time and we did not have enough time to get back into the big canyons so we headed towards the wheat field to see if any pigs were out feeding yet. As soon as we got to the wheat I noticed a lone boar feeding along the edge in the shade, so off we went. We covered alot of ground fast and were soon within 200 yards of the unsuspecting target. I wanted to get closer but with the wind blowing the direction that it was we had no choice but to shoot from where we were at. Neil got set up on the sticks and started throwing lead. The first shot went a little high but the next 2 connected and Neil had a 175 pound boar down. We loaded the pig and headed back to the trucks to see what Andy and Jay had done. The guys had sat and watched the main trail that comes into the wheat but no pigs ever showed. We headed to the ranch and hung Neil's boar in the walk in and headed home to get a couple hours of rest before hitting it again in the morning.

The next morning we came up with a plan, and Andy headed to the South wheat field with Jay, while I took Brian to the north field. Brian and I had not gone 100 yards from the ranger when I spotted a lone pig making his way up hill. I ranged him at 200 yards and Brian got set up to shoot but a good shot never presented its self. As Brian was watching the lone pig another 10 pigs walked up on the same trail but I could not get them to stop and Brian was not comfortable with the shot so we decided to keep walking. Just over the next rise we saw a group of 8 pigs, but they had already made it to the neighbors property so they were safe. We glassed for another minute or 2 but did not see any more pigs so we headed back towards the ranger. Just as we were getting to the ranger Andy called and said that there was a lone boar in the flats feeding 1000 yards south-east of us and he did not look to be in a big hurry. Brian and I decided to go for it and the race was on. We could not see the pig but I had an idea of where it was at and we checked the wind a set off in that direction. As soon as we gained a little elevation I spotted the pig but he was still over 500 yards away. Brian and I came up with a plan and the stalk was on. Pretty soon we were 300 yards and closing. At 150 yards Brian said we were close enough but I knew we could do better so we pressed on. When we finally got ready to shoot we were within 50 yards of the boar and Brian smoked him. The boar ended up being 150 pounds.

After a couple of quick photo's I called Andy to see if they had seen any pigs. Andy was watching our stalk when he looked down the hill and saw a group of pigs making their way towards him. His focus immediately switched from watching our stalk to putting on a stalk of his own. They closed the distance to 200 yards and Jay got set up and ready to shoot. As soon as Jay was ready Andy stopped the pig and Jay took the shot. He ended up hitting the pig in the neck dropping his first ever wild pig. The boar weighed in at roughly 150 pounds and had some nice sized cutters. We then met up and compared stories and took a few photos before heading back to the shop to start skinning. The group of guys had killed all 3 of the pigs that they had shot at and they couldn't have been happier. It was a great hunt and the group has already booked a fall turkey hunt so I am sure you will see them again this fall.

Today Andy and I guided a group of 4 hunters for pigs. We met in Maxwell and headed for the ranch to see what we could get done. Andy and I decided to split up and he took 2 of the hunters to the South wheat field and I took the other 2 hunters to the North field. We waited until legal shooting and began walking towards the hills in the center of the wheat field to get to a better vantage point. We did not get 50 yards from the ATV when I spotted a lone boar feeding in a small depression no more than 75 yards away. Tim was the first shooter so we got him set up on the sticks and he dropped the boar in his tracks. At the shot I grabbed Mike and told him to stay on my heels as we needed to get up onto the hill so we could see what else was in the wheat and after the shot I assumed that we did not have much time. As soon as we got to the top of the hill it only took seconds to spot another big boar making his way out of the field. I ranged the boar at 200 yards and Mike got set on the sticks and ready to shoot. As soon as he gave me the go ahead I stopped the pig and Mike sent a bullet on it's way. The first shot was just over the boar and the next 2 shots followed suit. Needless to say all we could do was sit and watch as the boar made his way back up into the hills. As we were watching the boar I looked to the left and saw another group of 10-12 pigs but they were already on the move and there was no way to catch them. We then grabbed the ranger, threw Tim's pig in the back, and headed up into the hills to see if we could cut off any of the pigs that we had seen headed that way. In the back of the ranch we saw a few other pigs but they beat us into the brush resulting in no more shots.

At this point it was getting warm so I called Andy to see if he had any luck. Within minutes of hearing our shots Andy spotted a lone boar in the wheat and they closed the distance to 200 yards and got set up for the shot. Andy stopped the pig and the shooting started but the pig managed to escape without injury. Andy and his hunters had also seen a few more pigs but unfortunately they did not get any more shots.

It was getting warm so we decided to call it a day and headed to the shop to get Tim's pig skinned and cooled off before the meat spoiled.

It was another fun hunt with a great group of guys that I am sure you will see on the blog again in the future.

It has been awhile since my last post so I figured I had better update the blog for all of our loyal followers. We finished up striper season the end of June and switched our focus to pig hunting, as the wheat had started to dry out and the pigs were taking advantage of the easy meal. We have conducted 8 hunts since my last post and all we have to show for ourselves is a pile of empty brass. We are still hunting and there are still plenty of pigs but it seems as if the bullets just haven't been flying true. We have had alot of near misses lately, but that just means more pigs for the rest of you who have not made it to the ranch yet this season. We will be hunting pigs thru mid August and then we will let the ranch rest for a couple of months before we get back after the pigs. We are currently booking into October and have some dates available for the early fall.

Today I guided Jim and Toni for stripers. We met in Colusa and headed to Ward's Landing and launched the boat. We powered down river towards the Meridian Bridge and then began fishing. The bait of choice today was minnows and as we drifted our way down river we picked up 3-5 fish on almost every sand bar. We continued our way down stream all of the way to Lupes Bend catching a total of 32 fish of which only 1 was of legal size to keep. Most of the fish were in the 16"-17.5" range and though they fought well they just were not legal. I decided to make the run back up stream to Tuttles Pump and work our way back towards the boat ramp. Again all of the fish seemed to be small. As we made our way down the last drift Jim finally hooked a big fish and the battle began. Jim fought the fish to submission after 15 minutes and soon had his hands on a beautiful 35 pound fish. The fish was spawned out and would have tipped the scales at over 40 pounds had it not been. Again it was another great day on the water with plenty of action, but very few legal sized fish.

Today I guided Bryan Templeton and his son James on a pig hunt. We met in Colusa at 3:45 AM and headed up to the ranch. After completing the paperwork we hopped on the ranger and headed up the hill. We went to one of my favorite vantage points and got set up to begin glassing. Legal shooting light came and went and we had not seen any movement so we just sat tight as I figured the pigs were just taking their sweet time leaving the wheat fields this morning. At 6:45 we heard a pig squeal South East of our location so we switched our focus to that ridge and within minutes spotted a group of 10 pigs working their way down the ridge. At the angle they were headed it looked as if we could get in front of them before they got into the brush, so off we went. We worked our way down the hill and got set up along the trail that I figured they would be coming down. Within minutes we could hear them moving our direction and soon enough they were out in the wide open and coming straight for us. I looked over the pigs and picked out the biggest boar in the group and Bryan got on him and ready to shoot. As the big boar stepped out into the opening in front of us at 33 yards, Bryan squeezed off the shot and the boar dropped in his tracks. It was the perfect ambush and Bryan had a 250 pound boar down, that headed straight for the taxidermist as soon as we got back to town. It was a great hunt and I am already looking forward to the next hunt.

This afternoon I guided Bob Hauptman and Scott Bacon on a pig hunt. We met at the ranch at 5:30 and headed up the hill to get set for the long wait. With the temperature in the high 80's I figured we would have to wait until 8:00 PM before anything started to move. We were set up in a flat where Jake had seen a couple of groups of pigs a week before and we hoped that they would be along soon. At 7:30, Bob said " there they are" and the race was on. The pigs had come down into the flat and were just rooting around so we took off on foot following the tree line and crept up to where we thought the pigs were going. As soon as we got set up the pigs came over a small rise and walked to within 60 yards of us. Bob and Scott were both ready and on the count of three the bullets started flying. Bob connected on a 150 pound sow and Scott on a 130 pound sow. The hunt was over and the high fives started. We took the pigs over to a different location and took some photo's before getting them field dressed. Both of the sows were in great shape and had a thick fat layer on them, as I assume they have been going down into the wheat field every night and gorging themselves on the grain. The pigs were skinned and hanging in the walk in freezer by 10:00 PM. It was another great hunt with a couple of great guys.

Today I guided Dick and Ralph for stripers. The guys had some meetings to tend to this morning so we got an early start of 12:30PM! Any of you who have fished with me in the past know that i live by the old saying "the early bird gets the worm", but today I had to work around their schedule. We launched out of the Colusa State Park and headed the boat north. I drove until I did not see any more boats and we started fishing. We got the rods rigged with minnows and got set to make our first pass. Within seconds we had a double hook up and landed two nice stripers, 1 keeper and 1 shaker. We continued to make another 6 passes in this spot with the same results, "double hookups". We only managed to get a couple keepers though as most of the fish were 16-17.5 inchers. We continued our way down stream and had the same results almost every where that we stopped. Alot of under sized fish and a keeper here and there. We made it back to the boat ramp around 6:00 PM, having caught 6 nice keepers for the box and roughly 30 shakers. The action was non stop and what the fish were lacking in quality they made up in quantity. It was another great day on the water and I can only hope that the striper fishing will hold out until the salmon make an appearance.

Today I guided Felipe, Ricky, Ryan, Chaki, and Danela on a striper trip. We met in Colusa at 6:00AM, launched the boat and headed up river. We started drifting minnows in a spot that had produced fish yesterday and within a half an hour the crew had 3 keepers in the box and had released several shakers. We continued to move up river from hole to hole and caught fish every where that we stopped. We caught a ton of shakers, lost a couple keeper fish and managed to get 8 nice keepers for the box. The biggest fish of the day was caught by Ricky. It was in the 12-15 pound range and put up one heck of a fight. Everyone caught several fish today and even though alot of them were shakers they still put up a great fight. There was alot of fun had by all and if I was a betting man, I would say this will not be the last time that you see these guys on the blog.

Today I guided Ed and Brandon Cornelius on a striper trip. The Sacramento River had started to clean up so we decided to head over there and take a look. We launched the boat at 7:00 AM and there was only 2 other trailers in the parking lot so I figured no matter what it was going to be a good day. We headed up stream and started drifting live minnows. At the first couple of stops we caught a few small shakers so we decided to keep moving up stream. The higher we went up river the better the fishing got and by 11:00 we had limits of nice sized keeper fish in the box. We caught a total of 10-12 keepers and roughly 30 shakers. The biggest, smallest, and most fish caught today were by young Brandon. His rod was absolutely on fire, and he even managed to hook his dad and beat me in the head with a lead weight. We had a great time and I hope to fish with these guys again.

This evening I guided Paul Morse and Bob Fischer on a pig hunt. We met in Maxwell at 5:30 PM and headed up to the ranch. I decided that I would try the East side of the ranch again, so we headed up the hill and sat down to see what would come out this evening. By 7:00 I was starting to get nervous so I left the guys and walked up the ridge to see if I could spot some pigs in the upper flat. As soon as I rounded the corner I could see roughly 40 pigs in the flat feeding at well over 1000 yards away. I quickly walked back and told the guys what I had seen and then took off to go and get the ranger so that we could drive closer to the pigs before beginning our stalk. As I came up the hill on the ranger I saw Bob waving his hands and then I looked past him and saw a group of 15 pigs out in the flat that they were watching. As soon as I saw the pigs and shut the ranger off it was evident that they had already heard me and started to move back up the hill where they had come from. Paul was already on the sticks ready to shoot and as the biggest boar in the group turned and presented a good quartering shot he touched the trigger and dropped the boar dead in it's tracks. The boar was roughly 200 pounds and should be a good eater. We all had a great time and I can assure you that we will be after a pig for Bob tomorrow morning.

This evening I guided Mike Messick on a pig hunt. With the weather being overcast I figured that the pigs would move early so we met in Maxwell at 4:00 PM and headed up to the ranch. We had been seeing pigs every evening working a flat on the East side of the ranch before heading down into the wheat, so we headed over there to see what would happen. At 7:00 PM a lone boar walked around the corner and was 500 yards out but feeding in our direction so we just sat tight and kept an eye on him. As he made his way to roughly 300 yards Mike got set up on the sticks and was ready to shoot as it looked like he was going to feed right to us. Just minutes later I caught movement off to the right and watched in disbelief as 2 coyotes headed across the flat and straight towards the boar. The boar noticed the coyotes and started to bolt up the hill and away from the approaching danger. At this point I ranged the boar at 250 yards and Mike took the shot. He hit the boar a little further back then he had wanted to but the boar stumbled and fell. Before Mike could get another shot in him he jumped to his feet, ran up the hill and laid down. We could see him laying there so we gave him a half hour to expire before walking up the hill to get a look at him. As we approached the boar he looked dead but all at once he sprang to his feet, turned towards me and started running straight at me. Luckily I had my trusty .300 Win. Mag with me and was able to put one right between his eyes at a mere 10 yards. For a minute I thought that I was going to get cut to shreds, but luck was on my side. It was another great hunt and the pig charging me added a whole new level of excitement for me as well as Mike!!!

Today I guided Don Sexton on a pig hunt. We met in Colusa at 4AM and headed up to the ranch. After completing the necessary paper work we headed up the hill and got set up on a knoll over looking the wheat field. As soon as it got light enough to see I spotted a group of 10-12 pigs feeding in the wheat field, and all that we could do is sit and see what way they would leave the field. After an hour of watching them they decided to make a move and just our luck they chose a trail that led them out of harms way. We then headed into the ranch and had not seen much until we came over a small rise and had a lone boar standing in the road at 50 yards. Don hopped out and tryed to get a shot but the boar darted into the brush seconds before he was to meet his maker. We jumped on the ranger and headed up hill hoping to spot the pig again. As we neared the top of the ridge we looked over our shoulder and there stood the boar back in the middle of the road where he had been when we first spotted him. We again hopped out of the ranger and took off on foot. As we crested the ridge we caught a glimpse of the boar feeding along a brush line but before we could get set up he walked into the brush, never to be seen again. By this time it was getting late so we headed to town and decided to come back for the evening hunt. We got back to the ranch around 5:30 and immediately started seeing pigs. The first group that we saw was a group of 15 pigs that were in the 30-40 pound range. As we watched them disappear we spotted the same group form this morning and it looked as if they were headed back to the wheat field, however, they hung up in the brush before they got to the wheat. By 7:30 it seemed as if there were pigs almost every where that we looked, so we just sat tight. At 8:00 we noticed a big boar out feeding on a flat. We were getting ready to make our move when a bigger boar that I am guessing at 300 pounds came walking out and proceeded to chase the smaller boar off of the mountain and out of sight. Again we sat down and started looking and within seconds spotted a lone boar making his way down to the pond below us. We immediately made our move and got set up and ready for the shot. The boar ran all of the way to the pond and as he tried to exit the pond I stopped him and Don took his shot. The shot was a little far back but the boar dropped in his tracks. After a follow up shot Don and I headed down to claim his trophy. The boar was roughly 150 pounds and should be great table fare. We saw roughly 40 pigs this evening and they should continue to come to the wheat for the next couple of months.

Today I guided Butch Davis and Jim and Nadene Haynes for stripers. We met at Ward's Landing at 5:30AM, launched the boat and headed down stream. We stopped just below Lovey's and started worming the banks, but could not get bit so we switched over to minnows. We started drifting at the Red Sea and it did not take long for Butch to catch the first fish, a nice keeper for the box. We began working our way down stream and caught fish every where that we stopped all of the way down to Lupe's Bend. The fish were very active and it seemed like we had to weed out all of the 16"-17.5" fish out of each spot before we could catch the keeper fish. We had several double hook ups today and even a couple of triples. Most of the fish were under sized but we stuck with it and managed to get 8 nice keepers for the box. In total we landed roughly 40 fish today and the action was non stop. The best part of the whole trip was that we never saw another boat on the water all day, we had the whole river to ourselves. Another great trip with some great client's.

Today I guided Richard Russell and Robert Hawthorne for stripers. With the water on the rise in the Sacramento River I choose to head over to the Feather and see how the action was. We launched at Boyd's Pump and headed downstream. We started working the sand bars and within a few minutes we had fish on. We made several passes down the same bank worming and were catching 3-5 fish a pass. We caught 15 fish on the worm before the boats moved in on us and we headed down stream. We then switched over to minnows and caught a few more fish before calling it a day. All of the fish that we boxed were nice fish in the 3-5 pound range. It was a great trip and we got off of the river just before the rain set in. I will be back on the Sacramento River as soon as the water cleans up.

Today I guided Doug Goldsmith and Don Sims for stripers. We met at Ward's Landing, launched the boat and headed down river. We stopped at the Fox Hole first thing and started worming. We caught 3 fish on the wall but they were all short so we kept on going down river. We wormed a couple of more places but the fish would not bite the worm so we switched over to minnows and started drifting. We started to pick up a fish here and there and just kept working our way down stream. Every stop we made resulted in a few fish but as we neared Lupe's Bend all hell broke loose. We could not keep a minnow in the water for more than a few minutes without a bite and we managed several double hook ups. The majority of the fish were in the 17" range but we did manage to catch 6 for the box. Out of the 30+ fish that we caught today only about 10 of them were keepers. Again it seems that what we are lacking in quality this season we are making up in quantity. Another great trip with steady action. When it came photo time I found out that the camera had a dead battery, so no pictures today. Sorry guys!!

Today I guided Joe and Chris Hoon on a pig hunt. We started the morning in one of my favorite glassing locations but it was un productive so we moved to another. Minutes after sitting down we spotted a group of 7 pigs making their way towards us. We got set up and the waiting game began but some how the pigs pulled a Houdini on us and we never saw them again. We waited on these pigs for over an hour before heading into the next canyon. We had not gone a mile when I spotted a lone boar feeding under a oak tree 500 yards away. We quickly came up with a plan and the race was on. We took off on foot and quickly closed the distance to 125 yards where Joe made a great one shot kill dropping the boar in it's tracks. The boar was roughly 150 pounds and should be great for the BBQ, just what he was looking for.

Today I guided Micki, Terry, Mitch, and Brett for stripers. I decided that the Sacramento River should be clean enough to fish so I headed to the Colusa State Park to see if I was right. We launched the boat and began working our way up river stopping along the way to anchor up and bait fish. We were getting bit every where that we stopped but the fish were not hanging on to it long enough to hook them. We ended up catching a few shakers and Micki hooked and landed a 12 pound hen that was released after a quick photo session. By the looks of things we are only a day or two away from the fishing starting to pick up again over on the Sac.

Today I guided Wayne, John, and Dennis for stripers. With the water rising on the Sacramento River, I decided to head over to the Feather River with hopes that it was stable. We launched the boat at Boyd's pump and started working our way down steam with the rubber worm. It was evident that the water had dropped a couple of feet over night so we headed further down stream in search of the fish. We started catching fish around the Bear River and continued to do so all of the way down to the Nichoulaus Bridge. There were a ton of shakers once again, however, we weeded through them and ended up catching some nice fish for the box. The biggest fish of the day was a 14 pound hen that was caught by Wayne and then quickly released after a photo. It was another good day on the water, but the amount of boats over there fishing is ridiculous. I will be returning to the Sacramento River as soon as possible, I just can't take the mad house!

This afternoon I guided Dan and Salene Mayberry on a striper trip. This morning the water was starting to rise and get muddy but I thought we could pull off 1 more trip before it was too dirty. We launched at the Colusa State Park and headed up stream to see what we could find. We stopped at several spots and drifted minnows but were not seeing much action. As we worked our way through the hole Salene hooked and landed a nice keeper sized male and then another that was a 12 pound male. We worked our way down to Ward's Landing before deciding to call it quits. Dan and Salene just wanted to get out and catch a few fish to eat, so we headed in. The river is supposed to rise 4 feet in the next couple of days and then recede and stabilize. Hopefully this will be just what we need to bring another run of fresh fish up our way. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

This morning I guided Dick Bosio and Bill McClure for some striper action. We met in Colusa at 5AM and headed for Ward's Landing. We launched the boat and headed down stream and started worming the rock walls. At the first stop we caught 6 fish and Bill landed a nice 8 pound male for the box. We continued to work our way down stream catching a few fish at each stop. After the fish quit biting the worm we switched to minnows and started drifting. We worked our way down as far as Lupe's Bend and caught a couple of fish at almost every stop. We kept 8 nice fish for the box and headed in around noon. There were alot of shakers again today but as long as you stick with it the keepers are there.

Today I guided Dan Todd, Chuck Nuchols, and Greg Adams on a striper trip. Kent Danjanovich came along as well to get some more video footage. We met at Boyd's pump at 5:30 AM and headed down stream. We started worming at the mouth of the Bear River and picked up a few fish as we worked our way down stream. When the worm bite slowed down we switched over to minnows and began drifting below the Nicholaus bridge. We drifted from the bridge down to beer can beach catching fish the entire way down, but just 1 here and 1 there. When we got to the bottom of the run I would fire up the big motor run back up to the bridge and then make another drift. We did this several times and by 11:00 AM we had our limits. There were a ton of shakers today and we caught roughly 50 fish to get 10 keepers for the box. The guys had alot of fun and we got some great footage for the video. The fish were not the biggest but kept the guys busy all morning, and will be great for the dinner table.

This afternoon Jake, Kent, and I headed over to the Feather River to see what we could find. We launched at Boyd's Pump and headed down stream. We started drifting minnows just below Tayler's Pond and caught a fish here and a fish there all of the way down to the mouth of the Bear River. However, from the Bear River down to the Nicholuas Bridge the action heated up and we caught another 15-20 fish on both minnows and trolling Yo-Zuri deep divers. We would drift from the Bear down to the bridge and then troll our way back up. The fish were scattered all over and not schooled up but we did manage a few double hook ups on the minnows. As it neared dusk we switched over to the rubber worm and started working the banks. We found a little wad of fish just below the Bear River and caught another 15 fish on the worm. Kent hooked into a nice fish the first pass and ended up landing the biggest fish of the day, a 15 pound hen that was released. We had a great day on both rivers and the story will be printed in the July issue of the Sportsman's News paper that is available at the Sportsman's Warehouse stores.

This morning Regina, Carl, and I fished with Kent Danjanovich from Sportsman's News Productions. Ken was out here capture some footage of our striper fishing for an up coming video that they will be producing and selling at the Sportsman's Warehouse stores across the West. We met Ken at 5 AM in Colusa and headed to Ward's landing. We launched the boat and headed down stream worming in all of the likely spots. We were able to catch 10-12 stripers on the worm and then we switched over to minnows. We drifted minnows from the Glory Hole all of the way down to the old Tisdale boat ramp and managed to catch another 15 fish. There were alot of shakers caught and we landed 10 keepers between the 4 of us, however, we only kept 4 fish as we were planning on heading over to the Feather River in the afternoon so that Kent could see all of what our local rivers have to offer.

Today I guided Greg Baker and Jay Wright for stripers. We met at 5AM and headed to Ward's Landing and launched the boat. We headed downstream and hit all of the same spots as yesterday but it wasn't until we got down below the Red Sea that the action picked up. We found a school of fish and began working them over with the rubber worm. We made pass after pass along the sand bar and ended up landing 30-35 fish of which over half were shakers, and the keepers were mainly in the 19"-24" range. What the fish were lacking in quality, they made up in quantity. It was a great trip and the guys had a blast.

Today I guided Brett Nystrom and Philip Purser for Stripers. We met in Colusa at 5:00AM and headed to Ward's Landing. We launched the boat and headed down stream to the Fox Hole. We grabbed the worming rods and wormed our way down the bank catching 6 fish the first pass, of which 3 went into the box. We went back up and made another pass and caught a couple more shakers before heading down to the Red Sea. We worked the whole bank on the West side of the river and had a couple of hits, and Philip landed a nice 12 pound male for the box. We continued to work our way down stream and caught a fish or two at almost every stop, but it wasn't until we got below Pierce's dock that the action heated up. We worked the shallows below Pierce's dock and caught another 15-20 fish of which most were keepers. We kept the rest of our limits and headed in. The fishing was fantastic and there seemed to be alot less shakers biting today. Hopefully the run will remain strong thru June.

Today I guided Bobby and Cora Bill for stripers. We launched at the Tisdale Boat ramp and headed up stream towards the Winship pumps. We started throwing the worm and Cora was the first to hookup, landing a nice 5 pound male. We were picking up a fish here as we worked our way down the bank. About half way down the wall we got into a school of fish and started catching 4-5 fish a pass in a 100 yards section of the wall. We just kept going back and fourth along the section of wall and ended the morning with 20-25 fish. We kept 6 fish for the box that were between 8-12 pounds. The big fish of the day was a 15 pound hen that was released quickly. It was another great trip and these guys are always a blast to fish with.

Today I guided Bob and Cora Bill for stripers. We hit the water at 5:30 and made our way down stream to the red sea. We started worming where I had caught the fish yesterday but they were not there so we made our way further down. We hit a couple more spots with no luck so we kept on moving. As we were floating our way down to the next spot I saw the fish boiling in the shallow water so we slipped in on them quietly and started ripping lips. Bob was the first to hook up and Cora and I were closely behind. We caught 7 fish the first pass of which 3 were hens in the 8-12 pound range that we quickly released, so we could get back to fishing. We went back up and made another pass and hooked a couple of more fish before some idiot decided to drive his boat between us and the bank right over the top of the fish. The moron hit bottom once and then gunned it blowing a nice stream of sand out of his jet. Needless to say he killed the bite so we went on the hunt again. We caught a few more fish as we worked our way down. When we got around the Winship pumps that action picked up and we boated another 10-15 fish before calling it a day. All in all it was a great day on the water and we had alot of fun.

Today I guided Doug Goldsmith on a striper trip. We hit the water early and started working the banks with the rubber worm. We got into a nice wad of fish at the second stop and Doug immediately had a nice 8 pounder in the box. Upon closer inspection we realized it was tagged as well, which is kind of like a band to the duck hunter, a rare treat. We kept on fishing and had several short bites and landed another 5 fish before we moved on. The next spot that we stopped at was again loaded with fish and we caught another 8 before the fish spooked. We again went on the hunt and in no time at all we were hooked up again. This spot produced another 6-8 fish, of which 3 more went in the box and we headed in. We were back at the launch by 11:00 AM. There were alot of small fish today in the 16"-18" range and are likely the culprits for all of the short bites. Today I guided Steve and Debbie for stripers. We launched at 5:45 AM and headed South. We went to the Red Sea and started with minnows. Within minutes Steve had a fish on and Debbie was quick to follow. We kept on catching fish until all of the boats showed up and I headed South. Almost every where that we stopped we caught fish all of the way down to Lupes Bend. There were alot of small fish today but we managed to put some nice ones in the box for dinner. In total we caught around 25 stripers of which 10-12 were keepers. The North wind was miserable but we made the best of it. Steve had the 2 biggest fish of the day with 1 being a 10 pound hen that was released and the other being a 12 pound male that we boxed. It was a great day on the water and I will be back at it on Monday.

Today I guided Leo and Pete for stripers. I decided to head South today to see what was down river. We launched at Ward's Landing and headed South. We stopped South of Lovey's Landing and wormed a couple of rock walls, but the fish were not there so we kept moving. The lovely North wind started ripping by 7:00 AM, so we gave up on the worm and put on minnows. As we reached the bottom of the Red Sea we started getting bit. Leo was the first to strike and Pete was closely behind. We kept moving down the wall when we got into the big school and had a triple hook up. We made 6 more passes in this spot resulting in 4 more triple hookups and a couple of doubles. When the fleet of boats hit I again headed South to see what else was down there. We hit all of the likely spots on the way down and they all were holding a few fish. We fished down to Grimes and then headed back up stream. On the way back up we stopped and trolled a couple of rock walls and managed to pick up another 6 fish. We ended the trip at 11:30 AM having caught more than enough keeper sized fish. Leo caught the biggest fish of the day which was a 10 pound hen that was released. It was constant action all morning and we had a great time.

Today I guided Dan and Cameron for some striper action. We hit the water at 5:30 AM and started working the banks with the rubber worm. We caught a total of 18 fish on the worm of which most were keeper sized fish. Once the sun got on the water we switched over to minnows and were able to catch another 15-20 fish. The action was almost non stop this morning and we were back to the ramp by 10:30 AM. We kept our limits of schoolie sized males from the 4-10 pound range. The biggest fish of the day was a 12 pound hen that was released to make babies. It was a great day on the water with plenty of action for all.

Today I guided Keith, Jerry, and Gerry on a striper trip. We met at 5:30 launched the boat and headed to my usual starting point. We threw the anchor, got the lines out and paitently awaited the first fish. The minnows were nervous but when we did not immediately get a couple of fish I knew we were going to have to leave old faithful. We sat tight for an hour and landed a couple of fish but they were small and the action was too slow for me so we pulled anchor and went in search of. We went up stream a 1/2 a mile and begin drifting minnows along a break line. As we started down the break I was marking fish on the graph and knew it would only be seconds before we hooked up. Keith was the first to hook up, with Jerry and Gerry closely behind resulting in a triple hook up. All of the fish were small so we released them and made another pass. We ended up catching 16 fish out of this spot and put a couple of nice fish in the box. We moved up to the next water line and caught a few more fish with one being a 5 pounder for the box. After a couple of passes we decided to move on to the next spot and it was loaded with fish. We got a triple on 5 pounders the first pass, a double on 3-4 pounders the second pass, followed by another double of keepers on the thirds pass. We kept working our way down the bank and found another wad of fish at the bottom of the run resulting in another double. We kept at it and made a few more passes hooking up multiple times each pass. We kept the rest of the fish that we needed to get limits and then headed down stream to see if we could catch a sturgeon. We got anchored up where I had seen several sturgeon roll over the last couple of days, baited up and got the lines in the water. We never did get a sturgeon to bite but we did hook several nice sized stripers that were quickly released to fight another day. It was a great day on the water, with plenty of action. I will be in the hills tomorrow chasing pigs and back on the water by Thursday for some more striper action. The fish are finally starting to hold so the fishing should go wide open in the next couple of days. I will keep you posted!!

This afternoon I guided Joel and Dillon Sanders on a striper trip. We hit the water at 12:30 and were off of the water by 5:00 with limits of schoolie stripers for both the guys. We headed up river and dropped anchor in a likely spot. Within about 10 minutes Joel hooked up with a nice sized keeper and Dillon was close to follow landing a 10 pound hen that was quickly let go. The action was not red hot but was very steady and got better when the river quieted down between boats. The duo caught around 20 fish on minnows and sardines with only about 5 of them being shakers. Again most of the fish were schoolie sized stripers in the 2-5 pound range. Today I guided Cal Kellogg and Sheldon Bright from the Fish Sniffer Magazine. We hit the water at 5:45 AM and right off the bat we had red hot action. As soon as we got anchored up I casted out 2 rods with minnows on them and started to walk a third minnow rod back when I got the first hit. I hooked the fish and before I could hand the rod off another 1 went down and we had a double. As soon as we landed both of those fish we looked over and had another on the third rod. The action was almost non stop for the first 2 hours and we managed to land 25 stripers of which most of them were keeper sized. The bulk of the fish were in the 22"-25" range and a few were shakers. We let the bulk of the fish go and ended up keeping limits of schoolie sized fish for the table. We were off of the water by 10:00 AM. You can read the full story in the next Fish Sniffer Magazine.

Today I guided Dan and Bill for stripers. We met at 5:45, launched the boat and headed up river. We did not go far before we stopped and got anchored up. Within minutes we caught a couple of keepers and then the waiting game began. We sat tight for about an hour and as it started to get light it was evident that the water had risen a couple of feet and turned chocolate brown. We were not having much action so we headed up river to see what we could find. We were getting bit at every spot that we stopped but all of the fish were small so we kept traveling up river. We went as far as the Maxwell pumps and caught a fish here and there but not the big numbers that we had been catching. We decided to head back down river to the first spot that we fished and it turned out to be a good decision. We fished the hole for 22 minutes and landed 13 keeper stripers, keeping 6 for the box. We headed in with limits of nice schoolie sized males in the 3-8 pound range. It was a little tougher fishing today, but I am sure it will be hot again as soon as the water clears. I am headed to the hills for a couple of days but will be back on the water Monday.

Today I guided Dick and Rudy for their weekly striper trip. We launched the boat at 5:45 AM and headed up around the corner and dropped the anchor. It took all of 20 seconds for Dick to hook up and bring in the first keeper fish of the morning. Within 20 minutes we had landed 10 keepers and 4 shakers. We sat there until 7:30 AM and boated a few more fish before we decided to move on. We moved a mile or so up river and set the anchor along a water line in 8 feet of water. Again Dick was the first to strike with Rudy following closely behind. We caught another 15 fish and kept 6 fish in the 6-8 pound range for the box. The big fish today was a 12 pound hen that Rudy caught and released to fight another day. We were off the water by 10:30 AM. I am back at it tomorrow and will post up another report as soon as I get in.

Today I guided Gary and Dan on a turkey hunt. We met up in Maxwell and headed up to the ranch to see what we could we do. I had been up scouting and had a good idea where were some toms were hanging out so we gave it a try. We walked in and got set up but the birds were silent and no where to be found so we moved on. We went further into the ranch and kept stopping to call but nothing would respond so we decided to get set up and see what came by. We sat there for an hour with no response so we got up and headed back towards the ranger. As we were making our way back we heard a gobble South of us and away we went. We headed into the direction that I had heard the gobble and I stopped to call a couple of times and the toms answered back, so again we got set up. I put Gary and Dan out front and I crawled into a gully behind them and started to call. Within minutes the 2 toms were coming in all puffed up and strutting their stuff for our hen decoys. We watched them for a few minutes and finally I gave the guys the OK to shoot and down they went. With almost a simultaneous shot the 2 jakes fell dead in the decoys. It was a great time and a hunt I will always remember.

Today I guided Larry and Tom on a striper fishing trip. We met at 5:45 AM and headed up stream to see what we could find. We anchored up on a seam in 8 feet of water and threw out some minnows. Tom was the first to hook up landing a nice keeper, however, he was quickly out done by Larry who landed a 15 pound male. We sat tight and landed another 15 fish of which nearly all of them were keepers and one was another 15 pounder that Tom released after a quick photo. We sat in this spot until 10:00 and the fish came and went. When the action died off we moved to another spot down stream and again it was fish on. We landed another 10 fish and then called it a day by 11:30AM. We had a great time and the guys are ready to come back when the rubber worm bite turns on. Today I guided Justin Hariz on a pig hunt. We met at 5:00 AM and headed to the ranch to see what the morning would bring. We left the parking lot and headed into the first big canyon stopping to glass along the way. We had just crested the ridge and started into the next canyon when I spotted a lone boar making his way towards us. We threw a quick plan together and headed down the ridge on foot to try and intercept the boar. We got in place and ready to shoot just as the boar rounded the corner. I quickly ranged the boar at 225 yards and Justin took his shot. He hit the boar square in the shoulder and he crumpled. The boar ended up being 225 pounds with 2.5 inch cutters. This was Justin's first big game kill and the head is at the taxidermist, so he will always be able to remember the hunt.
